How to Prevent Pigment Ombré Chipping

Recommended Application Method
To help prevent chipping with soft pigment ombré nails, it is important that the pigment is not left sitting directly on the outermost surface with only top coat over the top.
Pigment fades applied too close to the final surface can become vulnerable to tip wear, edge breakdown, and premature chipping, particularly around the free edge and side corners where the nail receives the most impact.
For best wear and improved retention, the pigment should be treated as a design layer, not just a final finish effect.

Recommended Full Application Process
1. Prepare and structure the nail as normal
Complete your full prep and enhancement application as usual, ensuring the nail has:

• proper adhesion
• correct structure
• adequate apex support
• a smooth refined surface
• A well-structured base is essential, particularly for clients wearing length or returning for longer maintenance periods.

2. Apply your base colour
Apply your chosen milky nude, sheer white, or soft translucent base shade and fully cure.
This creates the clean foundation for the pigment fade and helps the final blend appear soft, diffused, and seamless.

3. Apply the pigment fade
Using a sponge, ombré brush, or soft applicator, gently apply the pigment in thin controlled layers until the desired fade is achieved.
For best retention:

• keep the fade soft and diffused
• avoid overloading the nail with dry pigment
• avoid packing excess pigment heavily onto the free edge
• The strongest concentration of pigment should sit slightly within the body of the nail, rather than being built too heavily right on the impact edge.

4. Remove all excess loose pigment
Once the fade is complete, gently dust away any loose surface pigment using a clean fluffy brush.
This step is very important.
Any excess pigment left sitting loosely on the surface can interfere with sealing and reduce the top coat’s ability to properly grip and wear evenly.

5. Lightly refine the free edge and perimeter
Before sealing, lightly refine the free edge and outer perimeter of the nail if needed.
This helps to:

• remove any loose or exposed pigment from the very edge
• clean up the shape
• create a more secure sealed edge
• prevent the top coat from sitting directly over fragile pigment at the impact points

This step is particularly helpful for soft pigment fades, where the edge can otherwise become the first area to chip.

6. Apply a thin clear seal layer
Apply a thin layer of clear base, rubber base, or clear gel over the pigment fade, ensuring the product is floated smoothly over the surface without disturbing the blend.
This clear layer helps to:

• lock the pigment into the design
• create a more stable bonding surface
• prevent the final top coat from sealing directly over exposed pigment
• improve wear and reduce premature edge chipping

This is one of the most important steps for increasing retention with pigment ombré finishes.

7. Cure fully
Cure the clear seal layer completely according to your lamp and product system.
Once cured, the pigment fade is now sitting more securely within the design structure, rather than directly on the final outermost surface.

8. Apply top coat and cap the edge
Finish with your chosen top coat, ensuring:

• full even coverage
• proper free edge capping
• smooth perimeter sealing

The top coat should now be bonding to a sealed gel surface, rather than directly to pigment, which provides a much stronger and more durable finish.

Why this method works
This method improves wear because the pigment fade is no longer left exposed as the outer decorative layer.
Instead, it becomes a protected internal design layer, supported by:

• a refined edge
• a clear seal layer
• a stronger top coat bond

This significantly reduces the chance of:

• free edge chipping
• sidewall wear
• premature tip breakdown
• top coat lifting away from pigment-heavy areas
